However, there is no single magic number that fits all sorts of managers and the work they conduct. In fact, focusing on a single number can reduce efficiency.

What’s the solution? Introducing the facilitator.

A facilitator is a person whose job it is to lead people through a process in order to achieve a successful outcome. This process might be a meeting, a brainstorming session, training and development, planning, team building, conflict resolution, or any situation involving a group of people where desired outcomes, goals, or targets exist.

In L&D, the facilitator archetype is primarily responsible for managing the day-to-day training needs of employees, with less responsibility for individual delivery. The majority of the work is standardized. Teams receive the same kind of training and engage in similar activities.

Facilitator span of control

Yes, a facilitator’s major task is to coordinate training across all the segments in the company. However, even with this highly specific job requirement, a facilitator may face challenges in managing a firm’s learning requirements – especially if the business is spread out across multiple geographical locations. Therefore, the best bet here is to evenly distribute the training needs to multiple facilitators over various locations – so that a professional is responsible for only his/her geographical area.

How does PlayAblo assign a span of control to different facilitators?

Assigning the span of control to the facilitators means assigning courses to that particular area under the personnel’s control. With PlayAblo’s option, a facilitator will be able to monitor the eLearning or corporate training courses for that particular location only. If one wants multiple areas, then that can be assigned based on the locations the facilitators are responsible for or have been mapped to. A facilitator may need to monitor activities like creating training batches, assigning courses, and creating virtual classroom sessions. And all of the above alternatives are available via PlayAblo’s portal.

You can follow the steps given below in order to assign the span of control to a facilitator:

Step 1: The user administrator can click on the ‘user admin’ tab and then proceed to the ‘facilitator span of control’ icon.

Step 2: Select the facilitator and assign the city and branch from the drop-down menu.

Step 3: The assigned regions for the facilitator will appear something like this as shown below:

Benefits:

Geographical dispersion: If a company’s branches are far distributed, the L&D department will find it difficult to supervise each one. Divided spans of control reduce the workload in such cases.

Bird-eye view: Providing a span of control to a facilitator located in the central headquarters gives him the opportunity to monitor all the regions assigned to him. As a result, with all the data available from a single platform, s/he is better able to gauge learning progress and make improvements as and when required.

Again, an experienced facilitator with a solid understanding of the tasks, a good comprehension of the workforce, and good connections with the workers will be able to supervise more workers. Assigning individual spans of control as per locations also relieves the facilitator of vast amounts of unnecessary data, making training more efficient, streamlined, and effective.

Many businesses pursue the goal of identifying and implementing a single ideal universal span of control (SOC) – the perfect number of people that an L&D manager might supervise in order to achieve maximum training productivity and efficiency.
